Kindle publishing allowed writers to publish with no need for a book deal, and all the things that go along with trying to get one. Amazon uses a specific type of file called a. There are some things that most kindle publishers say that you cannot do without, like professional editing.

Once the fine folks at Amazon review your book it will go live in the Kindle store, making you a published author. This simplicity is probably the reason that Kindle publishing has attracted so many independent writers. There are a few authors in the Kindle publishing world that are well-known for their success.

Names like Steve Scott or Hugh Howey come to mind immediately. Both these authors publish Kindle books and are transparent about their earnings.

Steve Scott has gone on many podcasts and showed his earnings, which average out to about 40K per month. Hugh Howey, author of the best-selling, Wool series, has received offers from Hollywood to turn his book into a movie. For the many positive things about Kindle publishing there are a few potentially deal-breaking caveats.

When you decided to publish on Kindle you are asked if you would like to make your book exclusive to Amazon. There are a few benefits to doing this, including free promo campaigns, and the ability to show up more often in Amazon searches. But of course, you give up the right to publish your book anywhere else, potentially losing out on other markets, like iBooks. For starters, popular advice seems to be that you need to publish multiple books in order to see any kind of tangible success. The hosts of the popular, Self-Publishing podcast, recommend a system that requires at least eight books.

Depending on how fast you can type, and how many book ideas you have, the idea of writing eight books minimum could be a real shot to the gut. There are many authors with much more than eight books who claim to still be missing out on the success they had hoped for. One such author is Garrett Robinson.

If you have ever done any kind of work online, whether be for sites like Fiverr, Odesk, or even affiliate marketing, then you probably know about PayPal. PayPal is the most popular and preferred method of getting paid for most online entrepreneurs — aspiring or experienced. However, Amazon completely ignores it when paying their Kindle publishers. Some say this is because PayPal is now owned by eBay, a direct competitor. Instead you have to choose to receive a check — a paper check, mailed to your home — or direct deposit into your bank account.

Direct deposit would seem like the obvious choice, but there are some issues with it too. For starters, not all bank accounts accept the type of automatic deposit Amazon sends. In fact, I had some real trouble getting mine setup. Each time, Amazon support would tell me that things were all worked out, the next pay cycle would roll around, and my payment was still not sent. Once you finally do meet the threshold, you have to wait 90 days before you receive payment.

This 90 day period is for checks and automatic deposit.

But with checks you have the added time of waiting for mail, and possibly added costs, depending on your bank. The truth is, it isn't easy to market books just ask traditional publishers.

Because of that, the Kindle store has been bombarded with new books, now hosting more than 3. Simply writing a book and publishing does nothing to help you sell it. You are nothing more than one small cover in a pool of over three million others. The most popular way, of course, is starting a blog. It only seems natural that a person making money from writing, would market themselves in the same way, by writing a blog. But remember, time spent blogging, is time taken away from writing books.

Blogging is blogging, it's not marketing. If you're going to build an audience of readers and sell books you're going to have to do more than that. You are going to need to learn how to leverage traffic from your blog to sell books. There are websites, podcasts and of course, books dedicated to helping authors learn to market their books, but there is one in particular that I feel can help more than any other.
