We recognize that using Bloomberg for the first time can be very intimidating, especially if you need to find something fast. But Bloomberg is a very powerful tool and you will likely need to use it at some point in your career in capital markets. Once you get familiar with it, you will figure out your own ways to search for information. We provide below a brief section on the most commonly used Bloomberg functions in capital markets and in particular in Equity Research.

However we hope that you will use this primer as a starting point so that you can quickly find the most commonly sought-after information without stressing out. When people refer to Bloomberg, they usually mean the Bloomberg terminal, which is a dual-screen dedicated computer with its own special and very colourful keyboard. If you are at school or working in capital markets, you will likely be sharing the Bloomberg terminal with your fellow classmates or colleagues.

This is because it is impractical for each student or each person in the organization to obtain their own terminal as it is very expensive and may not be used by that person every day although some functions within an investment bank do use Bloomberg every day and individuals within those functions have their own terminals.

American Currencies - Bloomberg

Find out from your organization the shared log-in credentials to access the Bloomberg terminal. You will need a username and a password in order to log into Bloomberg and start using it.

Once you are logged in, you will see at the top of the screen a curser that is blinking. Try typing something there and you will see a number of different suggestions pop up. This will be the place where you will type in all of your Bloomberg commands. In this section we will focus on the basic commands related to equity securities. This will take you to a page where you will see all kinds of different commands that are available for Starbucks SBUX stock.

From there, you simply need to type in a command and hit to execute it. For example, if you need to look up the description of the company, once you are on the Starbucks page, you simply type:. WCR is the command where you can find all major currencies and their live exchange rate.

You can use the orange drop-down menu to change regions, which will display currencies associated with those regions. This will display the latest exchange rate. For example, the CADUSD Curncy will display how many US dollars it is required to purchase 1 Canadian dollar. You will need to create your personal Bloomberg account because you do not want to set up customized alerts on a shared account. Creating your personal account is free.

This is where you will actually set up a rule to forward the alerts you set up in Step 3 to your work email address.
