As the Nintendo 3DS reaches a new milestone in Japan , the Wii U seems to be headed in the opposite direction. While Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima confirmed the Wii U would have its production scaled back , it appears that Wii U systems are being recalled if they're still on store shelves.

NeoGAF member AuthenticM first spread word of the supposed recall earlier this week, where a Best Buy employee allegedly informed them that Nintendo recalled the store's Wii U stock. We've done some checking around since then, and it certainly appears as though the Wii U is near impossible to find in stock these days. Whether the retailers have decided to only sell bundles or if Nintendo has in fact recalled the Wii U remains to be seen.

A source has informed us that there are no recalls for Nintendo products that have been issued to Best Buy in the US and that there are in fact still consoles on the shelves, so it's possible that word of a recall hasn't reached everyone's ears yet or the recall could have been limited to Canada. We don't know if Nintendo is trying to recreate the WIi U shortage from Japan earlier in the year in the west or if they're trying to make sure they have systems to sell before the Switch comes out next year, but it seems some gamers will have a harder time finding the Wii U if they want one.
